Most people never open the hood except to top up washer fluid, so the engine bay quietly collects years of road grime, oil mist, leaf litter and dust. It does not affect how the car drives, which is why it gets ignored. It affects two things that matter: what a buyer thinks when you sell, and whether you can actually see a problem developing.
Why it is worth doing
A clean engine bay makes leaks obvious. Fresh oil on a clean block is visible immediately. On a bay caked in old grime it blends in and you find out when something fails. The same goes for cracked hoses, perished rubber and corrosion on terminals.
At resale it is one of the cheapest things that changes a buyer's impression. Someone who opens the hood and sees a clean, dressed bay assumes the car has been looked after. That assumption is worth more than the cost of the service.
How we do it safely
This is the part that worries people, and reasonably so. Spraying water around an engine bay carelessly is how you end up with an electrical fault. Our process:
- Engine cool before anything starts. Never on a hot engine, it warps and cracks things.
- Sensitive components covered, including the alternator, fuse box, intake and any exposed connectors.
- Controlled low pressure, not a jet wash. We use a degreaser and agitate by hand where it is needed.
- Detail brushes into the corners where grime actually sits.
- Thorough dry with compressed air before anything goes back together.
- A non-greasy dressing on plastics and hoses so it looks right without attracting dust straight back.
Honest note: on an older vehicle with perished seals or an existing leak, we will tell you before we start. Cleaning can occasionally reveal a problem that was being held together by the dirt. We would rather you heard that from us first.
Auto Glass Polishing
Glass gets treated as an afterthought in most detailing, which is odd given it is the thing you look through every time you drive. If your windscreen has a haze that wipers will not clear, or spots that survive every wash, that is not dirt. It is in the glass.
What actually causes it
- Hard water etching. Sprinklers and washing in the sun leave mineral deposits. Left long enough they etch into the surface and no amount of cleaning removes them.
- Wiper haze. Years of blades dragging grit across the screen leave a fine arc of scratching, usually only visible against low sun or headlights.
- Overspray and fallout. Industrial fallout and paint overspray bond to glass as readily as to paint.
Why it matters more than it sounds
Etched and hazed glass scatters light. In daylight you barely notice. At night, facing oncoming headlights or driving into low sun, that scattering turns into glare that genuinely reduces what you can see. Most people have adapted to it so gradually they do not realise how much visibility they have lost until it is corrected.
How we correct it
Glass is polished, not cleaned. We use a machine with a cerium oxide compound on a dedicated glass pad, working in controlled passes with the surface kept cool. It is slow and it cannot be rushed, because glass holds heat and will crack if you push it.
What we cannot fix: chips and deep scratches that catch a fingernail are structural damage, not surface contamination. Polishing will not remove them and we will not pretend otherwise. Those need a glass specialist or a replacement. Everything above the surface we can usually take out completely.
Water Spot Removal
Water spots are the most common thing people ask us to look at, and the most commonly misunderstood. They are not dirt. Washing harder will not shift them, and by the time most people call us they have already tried.
Where they come from
Around here the usual culprits are lawn sprinklers hitting a parked car, washing in direct sun so the water evaporates before it can be dried, and the local water itself, which carries enough mineral content to leave a deposit every time a droplet dries on a panel.
What is left behind is the mineral, not the water. Calcium and magnesium sit on the surface as a ring. That part is removable. The problem is what happens next.
Why leaving them gets expensive
Those minerals are alkaline, and when the sun heats the panel they begin to eat into the clearcoat underneath. A spot that would have wiped off in week one becomes an etched crater by month six. At that stage there is nothing sitting on the paint to remove, because the spot is now a dent in the surface of the clearcoat.
That is the difference between a quick job and a much bigger one, and it is entirely down to how long they have been left.
How we remove them
- Assessment first. We check whether the deposits are sitting on the surface or etched in. You can often feel the difference with a clean hand before you can see it.
- Surface deposits come off with a dedicated mineral remover and careful agitation. No abrasion needed, so no clearcoat is lost.
- Etched spots need machine polishing to level the clearcoat back down to the base of the etching. That is paint correction, and it is priced accordingly.
- Glass is treated separately with a cerium oxide polish, as covered in the section above.
- Protection afterwards is worth considering. A coated surface gives minerals far less to bond to, which is why coated cars get spots that rinse off rather than spots that etch.
Worth knowing: if your car is hit by sprinklers regularly, removal on its own is a temporary fix. It will look excellent and then start again. If that is your situation, say so, and we will talk about whether protection or moving where you park is the better answer. Sometimes the cheapest fix is not a service at all.
Pet Hair Removal
Anyone who drives with a dog knows that vacuuming does not get pet hair out of a car. You go over the back seat, it looks clean, you sit down and there it is again. That is not a failure of effort, it is physics.
Why vacuuming alone does not work
Pet hair is barbed and it works its way into the weave of upholstery and carpet rather than resting on top of it. A vacuum lifts what is loose on the surface. The embedded layer stays put, and normal use works it back up over the following days.
What we actually do
- Rubber and silicone tools dragged across the fabric to lift embedded hair out of the weave rather than skating over it.
- Agitation of carpet and upholstery to break hair free from the fibres.
- Extraction while the fibres are open, which is where most of it finally leaves the car.
- Detail work on seat seams, rails and under the seats, which is where the worst of it collects and where most cleaning never reaches.
- Vents and trim gaps, because hair migrates there and blows back out later.
Set expectations with us honestly: a car that carries a heavy shedding dog every day is a different job to one that had a dog in it twice. Tell us which you have when you book. Severe cases take hours of hands-on work and we would rather quote it properly than surprise you.
Smoke and Odor Removal
Odor is the service people ask about most apologetically, usually for a car they have just bought. Cigarette smoke, a previous owner's dog, spilled milk, or damp from a leak that has since been fixed. The smell outlasts the cause by a long way.
Why air fresheners make it worse
An air freshener adds a scent on top of the one you are trying to get rid of. It does not remove anything. After a few days your nose filters out the new scent and you are left smelling the original problem through it. Odor only goes when the source goes.
How we approach it
- Find the source. Smoke settles into the headliner and soft trim. Pet odor lives in carpet and padding. Spills soak through carpet into the underlay where nothing on the surface reaches them.
- Deep clean and extract. The contaminated material gets cleaned and the moisture pulled back out, because anything left damp becomes its own problem.
- Treat the air system. Odor accumulates in the vents and cabin filter and gets redistributed every time the fan runs.
- Neutralise what remains. Enzyme treatment for organic odors, ozone for heavy smoke. Ozone needs the car empty and sealed for a period, so it adds time to the booking.
The honest limit: heavy long term smoke is the hardest case in detailing. Years of it penetrates the headliner foam, and headliner is one of the few things that often cannot be fully cleaned in place. We can usually get a dramatic improvement. We cannot always promise the smell is gone completely, and anyone who promises that without seeing the car is guessing.
How Add-Ons Work
Any of these can be added to a detail, which is usually the sensible way to do it since we are already there and the car is already being worked on. They can also be booked on their own if that is all you need.
Pricing depends on condition rather than a flat rate, because these four vary enormously from car to car. A light pet hair clean and a vehicle that has carried a husky daily for three years are not the same job. Tell us what you are dealing with, send a photo if it helps, and we will quote it properly.
All of it is mobile. We come to your driveway with our own power and water.
